The Wisdom of Sophocles

In April of 2017, the Gaudino Fund sponsored a visit by The National Council for Behavioral Health’s Theater of War: Soldiers & Citizens Tour. A dramatic reading of Sophocles’ Ajax—an ancient Greek tragedy about the suicide of a great, respected warrior—was followed by powerful town hall discussion with five campus/local veterans, including Williams College staff members and a student, about the visible and invisible wounds of war. Nearly 130 College and community members attended the event, which was organized by the Classics Department and co-sponsored with the Theater Department, Lecture Committee and the Oakley Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
